Culture of hospitality

Fairy-tale nature, delicious food, nights out to be remembered for a long time - all these are frequent impressions of Serbia by tourists or foreign citizens who live here. However, on the list of nice epithets that people from abroad use to describe Serbia, one stands out in particular and of this one we are most proud – “Serbia is a country of hospitable people”. Welcoming every well-intentioned visitor in such a way that they feel at home, and even more comfortable than that, is a characteristic of the people from our area.

We firmly believe that the culture of hospitality is one of the key reasons why Serbia is the country that was visited by more than two million tourists from abroad. in 2023. However, Serbia is not only an attractive tourist destination, but has also become a magnet for many of those who see it as a place where they can live quality and comfortable lives. This text will look at all aspects of the hospitality culture of Serbia and will try to bring you closer to the characteristics of our people.

Welcome, and get comfortable

Whether you are coming to Serbia on business for just a few hours, as a tourist for a few days, or you are planning to move here, hospitality in various forms will not pass you by. There is no greater joy for Serbian people than to host someone in their homes, business establishments and unavoidable local bistros. Warmth, kindness, helpfulness - these will probably be the first "bites" of Serbian culture that you will try. After that, everything will take its course.

Let's hang out

The spirit of togetherness is felt in Serbia at every corner. Here, people like to do even the most ordinary things together, like going to the grocery store. Not to mention morning coffees, lunches or evening outings. These practically imply large groups in which completely unfamiliar people can often be found. The only thing that matters is that the atmosphere is healthy and cheerful. Therefore, do not be surprised if Serbian people invite you as guests or for lunch as soon as you meet. We admit, it may seem premature or even too straightforward to some. However, behind such gestures merely lies a good intention to make you feel welcome and appreciated as soon as possible.

We celebrate life

Serbia is rich in tradition and customs that are manifested through various rituals and celebrations. It might surprise you that we like to celebrate the New Year twice or you might find yourself enjoying the traditional morning outdoor barbecue for Labour Day. In any case, you will be delighted with the patron saints’ days (slava), celebrations honouring different patron saints, where family, friends and well-intentioned visitors gather. In Serbia, we say "one does not invite to slava". Whoever knocks on the door on that day is welcome and will be hosted as a dear guest. It is known that tradition brings people together, and events like this are an ideal opportunity to get to know Serbian culture and customs better.

Always there when you need them

Another important element of Serbian culture is solidarity and support among people. Serbian history is full of wars, suffering and fights for freedom. Therefore, there is a clear need for people to stay close and be there for each other in times of trouble and overcome problems together. Although we hope that you will not need this kind of support, it is good to know that you will always have someone to rely on no matter what happens to you in Serbia.

Serbian hospitality is something that must be experienced to be fully understood. From the warm smiles of people passing by, to spontaneous invitations to socialize, this culture of warmth will quickly win you over and hopefully be a decisive factor for you to stay here as long as possible. And if you are just visiting, then we hope to see you again soon.
